There are two medications that can prevent hair loss when started early, i.e. when you first start to thin. They are Finasteride (Propecia) and Minoxidil (Rogaine). Propecia is more eeffective but they are most effective when used together. These medications are about 85 % effective over a 5-year period in preventing hair loss. Minoxidil is over the counter. Propecia still requires a doctor's prescription.
