I have this problem too- my hair is very thick and weighed down. I would suggest going to the dermatologist. In the meantime take Zinc suppliments that improve hair growth. You can also wash your hair with Nioxin shampoo and conditioner (available at hair salons) or try Henna...it strenghtens the hair. Also try taking Vitamin E suppliments. Make sure to talk to a dermatologist though because they will have the best advice.

I, too, have this problem, and kept my hair long for a long time. Then a few months ago, I took the big step and got it cut short - fairly short on top so I can spike it with gel, and it looks good messed up. I guess I lucked out with a stylist who knew what to do. Another alternative is getting a "wavy" perm. The trick is to get a cut in layers, so it at least looks and feels like there's more hair. As you know, with your type of hair, a bad haircut really, really, shows, and seems to take forever to grow back.

if your hair is not chemically treated, i would recommend shampooing once a day with a basic volumizing shampoo, like matrix amplify, and following up with a volumizing conditioner on the ends only, like matrix amplify conditioner. if by dull you mean no shine, id recommend a clarifying shampoo once a week. i use my husband's paul mitchell tea tree shampoo; it has peppermint in it and it's mentholated so it tingles :). thin hair will be flat if you use no styling products and you let it dry naturally. you need at least a basic volumizing mousse (a root boost is better), and you must blow dry your hair. blow drying will also reduce oiliness.

Trim what you can to get rid of the dry ends. Then start with a good deep conditioning treatment. Hot oil is good along with Aussie 3 minute miracle. KMS makes an excellent deep conditioning product. Keep away from chemicals and heat for awhile and your hair should improve.

Comb a volumizing mouse into your hair (I like paul mitchell best). Blow drying in the direction of your hair will make it less frizzy. Once your hair is mostly dry flip your hair upside down and finish blow drying and spray with medium hold hairspray (this will give it volume). Flip your hair back over and arrange it w/ your fingers.

As far as keeping your hair from being frizzy, try BioSilk...either the aerosol or liquid. They are both WONDERFUL!! I have naturally wavy hair, and when I blow it straight, I always use biosilk and use a Chi straighting iron to smooth it out!

I am a hair stylist and have worked with many different people who have similar problems to you so I hope I can help you out! :)

My first suggestion is in relation to your split ends. The only way you can truly deal with them is to have your hair cut. You may only need a 1/2 inch to an inch taken off to really notice a difference. Once these have been taken away, your hair will already start to feel and look more balanced. Sometimes damaged ends can slightly weight the hair down and more so give the impression of a bigger volume at the bottom, due to the splits, which can make the roots look flatter than they are.

The next tip I can give is to use a shampoo and conditioner that is mainly for every day use, and has a sway toward more nautral products in it, for eg chamomile or plant extracts, as these tend to be lighter in consistency and also won't weigh the hair down. If you tend to use more creamy shampoo's and conditioner's, they tend to have by-products in them that give the hair weight, thus flattening the hair strands and giving a shiny appearance but also a heavier feel and look, so my advise for your hair type would be to transfer to lighter solutions. I would suggest using conditioner every other wash, as this can have a dramatic effect on weighing the hair down more than it needs. It shouldn't make any difference to the overall condition of your hair if you have your ends cut and keep them regularly trimmed :) You should notice the real difference after the first trim and about four shampoo's in.

Also, as one of the other answerers said, a beer rinse, or an egg white rinse, are very effective ways of boosting body in to limper hair.

For the egg white rinse, separate 3 large eggs from their whites and yolks, discard the yolks then mix the egg whites with enough water to make it pourable. Pour over hair. As you pour, do it gently enough so that you can work the rinse in to the scalp. Concentrate on this more than lengths and ends, as it will get to the root, haha, of the problem, sorry for the pun. Leave for 2 mintues, then rinse out with lukewarm, tepid water. Don't make the mistake of using warmish or even hot water, as you will develop a meringuy souffle on your scalp! lol :)

For the beer rinse, before you shampoo, grab a can of beer and pour in to a glass or big cup.. allow this to go flat and warm before you progress to the next step.

Shampoo you hair and rinse as usual, then grab yourself the flat beer and pour gently over your hair, again concentrating on the scalp more than anything else, work it in to the roots with your fingers, as this will boost the roots in to life, and may get them tipsy and therefore happier, lol.. joking of course. My hair styling jokes get more groans than giggles, ha. When you are done, rinse with cool water until the odour has gone and you should have a little more bounce going on :)

I would recommend using the homemade rinses alternately twice a month. The beer rinse one week, then the egg rinse two weeks after and so on.

If you use styling products like mousse, gel etc and apply directly on wet hair, allow the hair to dry out a little first, maybe by lightly towel drying, then apply the products. I say this as the product will be too dissolved to be of use when the hair is sopping wet, and therefore you will need to use more, which will weight the hair down. By leaving the hair to dry a little first, you will use less than before and keep the bounce you will be starting to develop :)

i would suggest going into a salon and asking them to picture it. the salon i work at takes a picture of you and then selects your hair type from several thousand options and puts different cuts on you on the computer so you can see what it will look like. sometimes with really 'odd' hair textures that do not show on teh computer, we will use the 'heads' to show how it will fall.

if your brave, i would suggest a short cut, it will make your face look less round and straight thin hair works best with shorter cuts or shorter in the back and getting longer towards the front.

I've had the same problem, try staying away from using too much heat damaging tools such as dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. Also, it could help to speak with your doctor about trying a hair, skin, and nails vitamin to assist your hair in its regrowth. Sometimes stress can also be a factor, so exercise can help to! Once your natural hair has had a chance to come back, it should go back to normal. :)

I'm going on a cruise in 2 weeks. I had to get my hair cut short back in January due to a bad straightener in October that left my hair thin, super soft, hard to manage, hard to hold a style, fly away because of the softness, and broken. I tried mousse this morning but it weighed it down and actually made it harder to do.

Maybe try switching shampoos. You need to use something for fine thin hair. I use Pureology Volume, but Boilage has a really gentle poo/condish set for volume (fine thin hair). As far as holding your style without being brittle...maybe try something like Redken Rewind or Redken Guts, which is a mousse but it is for volume (fine/thin hair).

You'll need to change the way you think of your hair. Reduce the amount of heating appliance (blow dryer, flat iron) or reduce the heat of the appliance.

Also, for your cruise, try the natural look. Get waves using something like Redken Touch control and then use a wide fabric headband that ties in the back to keep the wind from blowing it in your face all the time. Throw on a big pair of Nicole Ritchie-esque sunglasses and you'll be adorable!

My friend has really thick wavy hair, and it used to take her hours to blow dry and straighten her hair..then she got this stuff from Redken called smooth down. She puts it in her hair when its wet and then she blow drys it, and she said she barely has to straighten her hair at all. Maybe just one or 2 small pieces. And trust me, her hair dont straighten easliy. Its only wavy but because it so thick, it takes alot to get it straight...so this product must work pretty well.

My hair loss is not due to malnutrition or disease, but I think that I naturally have thinning hair. It's hard too cause I'm a woman. At least with a guy you have the option of shaving your head. Yep, I hear Rogaine for women works well. Try that. Are you sure your hormones aren't out of balance? My mom has hypothyroid and one of the symptoms is thinning hair around the crown. I'd check it out if I were you.

I have thinning hair also. Diet plays a huge roll in how your hair looks. I looked at the vitamin thing and found that Omega - 3 did wonders for me. Me hair is stronger and looks healthy.

I also found that alochol and tylenol did major damage aswell. My hair was dry for days after taking a tylenol. I quit drinking alochol totally and it shows in my hair.

You don't want to wear a clip on, because they cause the hair to break-off, you do want to keep your hair washed and conditioned and away from all types of heat, no blow or hair dryer, curling instruments or chemicals. There are products called Dr. Miracle in the ethnic section at wal-mart that works, also, I like the IC treatment products they work good. Other than that you could ask your local hairdresser, some are very good at getting hair to grow, like some people have green thumbs. Good Luck!

Did anyone experience hair breakage from extensions? I had the fusion kind about a year ago and my hair is still recovering. The broken hair is underneath, closer to my scalp, so it is not noticable. I see a steady progression in my hair becoming thicker, actually...the stuff growing in is really thick and the rest of my hair is fuller than it used to be. The reason it feels thin is because of the discrepancy between the broken part growing in (at about the bottom of my neck) and the rest of my hair which is down to my collarbone. Yes I had a similar experience, actually my hair would fall of if I ran my fingers through it. It was horrible. I did recoup, It took a few months but I would never recommend extensions. Take you vitamins, keep it clean, and wait. Thats all you can really do now. Best of luck!

i got extentions about a year and half ago and i think that my hair has fully recovered. My hair went sooooooo thin and would drop out when i washed it, even after i took the extensions out. Its a bit thicker now and i think it has just about recovered. I really feel for you, dont worry it will recover. i know, it was the worst decision i ever made too!

im asian too, and i think that would look great on asians. its really chic and modern and lots of asians hav this. however, i dont think the thing that really matters in your race, but rather your face shape. this style looks best on oval-y, longer faces. i would say that u should NOT get this haircut if you hav a round or heart shaped face. Its sorta a hairstyle designed for longer faces. heart faces are wide at the temples, so it wouldnt complement their face shape.

Wow, there can be many reasons for hair loss. More important than just how it looks is your overall health. Sudden hairloss can be a symptom of an underlying health condition. If you haven't had a complete physical in a while get one. This can rule out autoimmune disease( a leading cause of hair loss in woman), thyroid imbalance, low iron as well as other minerals need for proper hair growth,hormone imbalance the list goes on and on. Also ask yourself a few key questions: Have you been on a strict diet recently? Have you had an unusual amount of stress lately? Have you exposed yourself to anything unusual?( I had a flu shot..and a lot of my hair fell out...luckily it came back but who would have guessed!)

Do a pixie cut! (Think Natalie Portman). This will work especially well if you have fine features and a small face. I have very thin hair and I wore my hair this way for 10 years...I loved it! It's also a very easy style to dress up or down and it's very easy to deal with on a day to day basis.
