1. Try Coloring

If you inherited a tendency for hair loss, you likely have very healthy hair overall. Therefore, your hair can benefit from permanent or semi-permanent color to give body and volume to hair.

Medications can weaken hair, causing it to break or fall out. Semi-permanent color is good in this case, too, because it does not contain ammonia or peroxide. It will not damage hair, but will give it body and volume.

If your hair is fine-textured, semi-permanent or permanent color is fine, as long as it is professionally applied. Colored hair can easily get over-processed, which damages it, causing further hair loss.

2. Use Volumizing Products

Many volume-building hair products contain paraffin, which is beeswax. That's not good for hair, because it builds up and can make hair break.

However, volumizing products sold in salons do help. They won't weigh hair down, and they won't damage it. Mousse, for example, can be applied at the root area for support. Then, begin blow-drying the root area, applying tension with a brush to build volume. Use a light finishing spray to hold it.

3. Shampoo and Condition Your Hair When Dirty

To protect hair, the best practice is to shampoo only when hair is dirty. Because fine hair gets dirty faster, people with fine-textured hair need to shampoo more frequently -- even though fine hair breaks more easily.

For that reason, fine-textured hair benefits from a good shampoo and volume-building conditioner.

4. Find a Style That Suits Fine Hair

Blow dryers should not be a problem, even if you have fine hair. However, be very careful about putting high heat directly onto hair. Flat irons and curling irons can cause damage and breakage.

Because they contain very strong chemicals, curl-relaxing products are a no-no for fine hair.

5. Get a Permanent Wave

Permanents can help give volume to fine-textured hair -- but hair must be healthy, not dry or brittle. Only a gentle body wave is advised, because tighter waves can damage the hair. Because chemicals in permanents are harsh, a permanent should be only a last resort for fine-haired people.

Again, make sure a professional stylist gives you your permanent, so that hair is not damaged

Hi, I am a 29 year old gay man with thinning hair... I'm sure you and I share some disappointment when we stare in the mirror and are less than thrilled with what we see. I had great success with a procedure called Medical Hair Restoration. MHR.com if you're interested. I had my procedure done locally, it was stress and pain free, and I noticed excellent results. Basically it's an outpatient cosmetic surgical procedure, done with a local anesthetic. The surgeon will remove a "donor strip" from the back of your scalp where no one will ever see the scar. From the donor strip, the nurses harvest the grafts. A graft consists of one to three hair folicles. The grafts will then be "planted" into your head (yes, it's painless and I'm a big wuss when it comes to that) where you need more hair. After 3 to 5 months, those grafts will begin to grow just like your remaining hair. In about a year you will have more hair where you once had an embarassing thin spot. It comes in slowly so no one will notice. (Meaning you're not going to go in bald and come out looking like Elvis 8 hours later) I highly recommend this procedure and intend on having it done again (for a different part of my head) shortly. Less than $10,000 too. Works on Men and Women. Of course you could always try Rogaine for Women too, but that only works on the crown of your head. If you have thin hair on top or in the front, Rogaine won't work. Oh and because the "donor strip" is slightly larger than an inch wide and 4 inches long, when they sew you up you actually get a little face lift too, reach behind your head and pull the slack out of your skin and you'll see what I mean.

By the way, Bosley is the exact same procedure but it's about $4,000 more than MHR on average.

It depends on why your hair is thinning, but there are many things you can do..

(Most of this advice is based on stuff my fiancee does. She's 25 and has what she calls "homer simpson hair")

Dye it - dyes can make hair look thicker. Especially if you dye it a lighter color, your scalp will not show through as much as it does when your hair is dark.

Style it - Curling or waving your hair can make it appear thicker. Teasing it can help too, but it is damaging in the long run.

Don't mess with it - don't brush, wash, or style it more than you need to. The more it is handles, the more opportunities it has to break off.

Use thickening products - I HIGHLY recommend Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. There are several different formulas to choose from. They seem to work really well. You can actually use a tiny bit of the conditioner on damp hair as a styling aid and leave-in. Take a look at http://www.nioxin.com

Get a good cut - Find a stylist you really trust, and talk to her about getting a cut that can give the appearance of thicker hair, with minimal daily heat styling.

could you be anemic? might be an iron deficiency... or just stress - should check it out just in case next time you see your gp.

would try to keep it on the short side (ask stylist to use whatever tricks s/he's got to keep it fluffy, eg texturizing), and if your hair is otherwise strong - not too much breakage, shiny - colour it to beef up the hair strand.

also - for volume, and shine, try to minimize silicon-based shampoos, they cause buildup - and use those build-up remover shampoos once a week. Don't use more any conditioner more intense than 'medium'.

I had hodgekins lymphoma in my right neck, I went through chemo and radiation. The radiation wiped out my hair in a perfect line all around my head at about the bottom of my ear, circling around the back(even cut a straight line in my beard). My hair has now completely come back, but it's thinner where it was missing. My question is would something like rogaine, or the like, be able to fill these areas out(not worried about the beard, it's not noticable anyway, grows fairly evenly)? Can you focus those kinds of treatments? Anyone with firsthand knowledge or any help would grealty appreciate it.

Be happy to have survived! Congratulations! I had a similar issue when I had radiation. My tumor was wrapped around my neck, so my radiation was in that area. My hair on the back of my neck and about halfway up the back of my head has never come back. At least I can do the comb-over now. It's been 3 years. Don't know what else to do!

I lost all my hair from chemo, and I have found that Pantene ProV's new line has a shampoo, conditioner, and mask that will have your hair thicker within a week or two. The kind I use is called Time Renewal and has a green stripe on the bottle. You could use the mask on just the areas that are thinner, and it should help out a lot. Good luck!

WOW , look at that.....miss "I heart horses" there just completely stole my answer from a previous question via "copy and paste" and is passing my words off as her own.

My answer is about the GNC UltraNourishair and ProCaps labs capsules...

I have taken the GNC pills for 4 months and supplemented them with extra Biotin because they only have 1200 mcg of Biotin and you should try for a minimum of 2500 micrograms.

I am switching to Procaps labs capsules when I run out of the GNC because Procaps formula has more Biotin in a more pure form with more of the trace elements that support healthy hair growth.

I take about 5000 micrograms which equals 5 milligrams of Biotin daily and my hair is growing fast and thick and dark.

Hi Everyone! I am a 29 yr. old female (brown skinned and have dark hair- Pakistani/Indian) with thinning hair on top. If I part my hair in the middle, it is VERY visible. I normally tease my hair on top, bunch it together %26amp; clip it. That way you can't see my scalp. Sick of my long hair (years with this style), it's to my bra strap. It is layered. My face is round %26amp; I have a widow's peak. I am trying to not blow try my hair %26amp; just let it stay wavy. My hair is very dry at the ends. Most of the time I am just accepting of it all and get on with it but some days- well, it's not easy for a woman to suffer hair loss (I can't imagine it's easy for a man either). I do not have any perfect answer but as a licensed beautician I would suggest a short cut for the top and always part to the side or better yet no part. If you can find a style with no part it may help to give the appearence of more hair. Shorter is always better for thin hair. Whatever you do stay away from heavy conditioners and styling products.

You can find natural herbs that may help with the thinning and growth. Usually in capsule form or do what I do and grow your own. Check your local health food store. I use a shampoo with all natural ingredients and it seems to help me maintain healthier looking hair. It cost more but I like the natural products.

That sounds really tough:( Maybe you could get a fringe cut in to hide your hairline at your forehead, and a half-ponytail would help to cover your scalp. For something shorter you could maybe have a bob with a side parting - with your hair parted where there's more hair, rather than bang on top.

If it gets worse you can always resort to extensions, they can do wonderful things with hairpieces these days. Don't despair, there's always a way!:)

It really doesn't matter the brand of shampoo, its the conditioner, you need a deep hydrating conditioner, but I would recommend that you buy a product from sally's called "bone marrow" its not a conditioner, but you apply it in between the shampoo and conditioner, and it builds your hair up. My hair stylist recommended it to me, and it works wonders.

There are a lot of techniques you can do to style your hair, but if you have a straight cut its always going to tend to be on the thinner side. You can prevent cutting length while adding layers, cut it a bit shorter as hair tends to weigh down. You can get a body perm which does help a bit but is full of maintenance. There are a lot of haircare products designed to help with volume, but in my experience a good layered cut gives lift and volume. I would ask your stylist for recommendations if you are interested in layers. Layers can be beautiful and low maintains when done correctly.

I got a really cute funky short cut, then i blow dry it smooth and have just kind of learned to accept my lack of volume and found a style that works for me. The back is really short so I can spike it up with a gel or pomade. The front and sides are longer and i keep those smooth. I suggest you find a style that works with your hair, it took me 22 years to accept my hair and find a style that works, but it really makes things easier, i finally don't HATE my hair!

My mom is in her late 40s and her hair keeps getting thinner and thinner. It's to the point that at a certain angle you can see her scalp. She is so upset by it and so self concious.

At the moment I have it in a blunt bob (no layers but very slightly graduated at the back). It looks good, I wash %26amp; condition it then apply a light volumiser (the Aveda one is excellent) and either tip my head upside down and blow dry or scrunch it into curls (my hair is naturally quite wavy).

Firstly, bleaching it is great, it stops being flyaway and it gets thicker and easier to manage. If you don't want to be blonde, there are tons of great colours you can go for that will thicken your hair right up. I personally have an asymetric cut with a blunt fringe and layers, and my hair can be huge!

If you're not quite so adventurous, I would suggest you got for a blunt or shaggy bob with layers and a nice fringe that you can shape around your face. It makes your cheekbones much more pronounced and softens your face. You can have it a little asymetric, which looks incredible, and get a bit of colour on it. You'll love it I promise!

They should be avoided on thin hair really, as you dont want to add any damage. Also the feathery type style would look bit odd with a perm. I have dark hair, and I got MY hair to the middle of my neck, slightly layered so it's not a bob. It's low maintenance, and to "style" it, you flop it like when you bend over, and you use a kind of light gel and a put the hair-dryer on hot and blow over the hair that's on top when you bend over. Flop it back, and it'll get volume. I got ten inches cut off this summer, and I have a round face and thin hair as well, so it might look good on you too, but I have dark hair. You could ask the hairstylest, if you want, too, that's what I did.

It sounds normal. If your hair has been parted the same way for a long time, then it's settled into that pattern and you'll be able to see the scalp along the part. If you still have thick hair, I think it would be obvious that it's just the way your hair is parted. Try switching the location of the part.

If you're worried or detect other changes in your scalp or hair, consult a dermatologist. He or she will be able to see if there's anything going on with your scalp to cause the change.

well im not a gurl but i have the poofiest thickest curliest hair ever so i normally just go to my stylist about once a month to get my hair thinned. you can tell them not to lose any length and it will be thinner than ever. they use these weird kind of scissors and maybe a little razor and it works really great. you can go as thin or as thick as you want just be open with your stylist and ask about how to keep your new hair in good conditions

The best thing I've personally used for thinning hair is massage thrice aweek with ALMA or Vatika coconut oil (find in indian store), some MSM, biotin and Niacin suplements. Acid reaction from alkaline-forming food

Most vegetables are gentle cleansers. Fruit, especially citrus, may cleanse too fast and cause an acid reaction. That is, more acidity is stirred up in the body than the body can handle at that time. Take it easy, go slowly.

meat, poultry fish, dairy, white flour, white rice, white sugar etc. and all items containing them.

Grounding food

When cleansing runs too high, the body needs grounding. This can be dome with legumes, beans or lentils, without adding too much burdening to the body.

Detoxifying the house

Check the house for toxins which make acid: pesticides, herbicides, mercury in soft facial tissues, bathroom tissues, fabric softeners, wall paint etc.

Best avoid areas with herbicides (golf courses, hotels, parks) and may be use an ionizer at home and in your car.

Check your house for mothballs, they contain the highly toxic arsenic, releasing fumes even from clothing which had been stored in mothballs. Arsenic can cause hair loss and many other disorders. Use lavender blossoms instead for moths.
